Preparing for your admission

How you prepare for your stay in hospital will depend on the treatment or operation you require, and on you as a unique individual. We trust that the following guidelines will answer any questions you may have, so you’ll know what to expect during your stay and treatment.

Drinking and smoking

As a rule, you should not drink alcohol the day before your admission. If you’re a smoker, you should try to give up or cut down as much as possible, especially if you’ll be undergoing surgery under general anaesthetic.

Fasting

Take note of the fasting (not eating or drinking) requirements if you’ll be having general anaesthetic or conscious sedation, as your safety and comfort are important to us. Your doctor will provide guidelines for fasting prior to surgery. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in a delay or even cancellation of your surgery.

Taking medication prior to admission

If you are taking chronic medication, blood thinners, herbal medicine or any traditional medicine routinely and will be undergoing surgery, you may be required to stop taking it before your admission.

You need to bring the following important items for your planned admission to hospital

On the day of your admission, you should report to the hospital’s reception desk at the time recommended by your doctor. Our hospital admission personnel are committed to providing you with efficient service and will assist you with the regulatory documentation if you haven’t done a pre-admission beforehand.

Scheduled and full term admissions

Please report to the hospital’s reception on the day that you are booked for your admission, at the time advised by your doctor. However, if your contractions start or your waters break around the time of your scheduled admission, ie, when your pregnancy is about full term, you should make your way directly to the maternity ward.

Emergency admissions

Should you experience contractions or your waters break prematurely, you experience bleeding, high blood pressure, or other serious health complications, please notify your obstetrician and go to the emergency department of the hospital where you will be giving birth, or directly to the maternity ward if there is no emergency department at the hospital. If needed, call an emergency medical services provider for assistance to take you to hospital.
