Established in 2010, the Centre of Psychotherapy Excellence (COPE) is a multidisciplinary treatment programme at the heart of our mental health facilities. COPE offers a range of mental health services. Our programmes provide you with an opportunity to be involved in several therapeutic groups and activities, including learning new skills to help you manage your mental health better.
Our purpose at COPE is to walk with each of our patients on a journey towards healing and improved mental health.
We select the best multidisciplinary professionals to deliver a truly person centred experience. Through COPE, you will have access to a range of registered mental health professionals, including psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and dieticians (depending on the programme), to help you on your mental health journey. The COPE teams work together with psychiatrists, nursing teams, and other psychologists to provide you with the best and safest mental health care and achieve the best possible outcomes.
what is cope?
The theoretical foundation of the COPE programmes is dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). DBT developed from cognitive behavioural therapy, but with a far greater emphasis on emotions. It was developed by Marsha Linehan to help treat intense emotional swings, impulsivity, identity confusion, relationship difficulties, and suicidal and self-harming behaviours. Importantly, DBT is a teachable and practical treatment, making it easy to learn and apply in your life.
Individual DBT therapy focuses on the most significant, and personal problems. It also uses group therapy sessions to focus on skills development and peer learning. This enables you to learn the skills, and to practice them in everyday life with real time situations.
DBT is effective in managing a range of mental health issues and challenges. It has been shown to help with containing emotional distress, decreasing impulsivity, and improving conflictual relationships. It is also effective in decreasing suicidal thoughts or behaviours, self-harming behaviours, and aggressive behaviours.
The COPE teams offer a range of services (facility dependent), including:
Face to face sessions
Virtual individual sessions
Virtual group sessions
Family sessions
