Top award for Mother City surgeon
Professor Jake Krige recognised for exceptional achievements in surgical research and mentorship, teaching, academic leadership and patient care
Internationally acclaimed surgeon and senior clinical researcher in Surgical Gastroenterology at the University of Cape Town, Emeritus Professor Jake Krige, has been awarded the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Award and medal by Netcare in recognition of exceptional achievements in surgical research and mentorship, teaching, academic leadership and patient care.
Speaking at an event held in honour of Professor Krige at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, Dr Louis van der Hoven, Netcare’s regional general manager Western Cape and Dr Otto Thaning, who delivered the citation, said that Professor Krige was deeply respected for his contributions to the medical profession in academia, research and dedication to patient care.
Krige, the leading author and researcher in the world on the management of complex pancreatic injuries, is the previous Head of Surgical Gastroenterology and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital. He is Editor Emeritus of the South African Journal of Surgery and past president of the South African Gastroenterology Society. A recipient of the South African College of Medicine Douglas gold medal for Surgery and the British Moynihan surgical medal, he received the prestigious University of Cape Town Distinguished Teacher Award in 2002. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons of South Africa.

Professor Krige has been an invited speaker at surgical symposia and international meetings on every continent and has prodigious research and academic output. An inspiration and a role model for younger surgeons, he has taught over 5 000 medical students, 150 surgical trainees and over 40 international postgraduate surgical Fellows.
Professor Krige’s Master’s thesis established the international benchmark for the endoscopic treatment of life-threatening bleeding from veins in the gullet. While his Doctoral thesis and publications on complex pancreatic trauma established the Cape Town surgical unit as the leading centre globally and acknowledge his status as a world leader in the surgical treatment of serious pancreatic injuries.
Founded in 2011, the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Award, an initiative of Netcare in association with the Christiaan Barnard Foundation, pays tribute to doctors who practise at healthcare facilities within the Netcare Group and who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their specific field while contributing to the advancement of the medical profession.
Netcare University of Cape Town Academic Hospital manager Lizl Rodriques said that Professor Krige has taught younger surgeons the professionalism required to do complex and demanding surgery and combined this skill with the empathetic treatment of patients with kindness, consummate clinical care and compassion. His career has been defined by his commitment and abiding belief in medical practice as a force for good and consequently, his collegiality and interpersonal relationships are appreciated and admired by medical, nursing and administrative staff alike.
