“We at Netcare are always creating opportunities to share knowledge about advances in patient treatment and healthcare innovation with other medical practitioners,” notes Barry Bedford, director of Netcare Hospital division’s Gauteng South West (GSW) region. With this in mind, Netcare recently held a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) symposium at Sunnyside Park Hotel in Johannesburg, which was attended by 103 general practitioners and specialists.

Presentations were done mainly by specialists from Netcare hospitals in the GSW hospital region, which hosted the event. This included a presentation by breast surgeon Dr Sarah Rayne from Netcare Rand Hospital on recent advances in breast care and a talk by paediatric intensivists Dr Miles Barlett and Dr Porai Moshesh from Netcare Garden City Hospital on paediatric ICU interventions Topics such as foetal medicine, fertility and minimally invasive hip surgery were also addressed at the two-day seminar, and Dr Dena van den Bergh, director of quality leadership at Netcare, discussed the ethics related to antibiotic stewardship.

“Continuing professional development in the field of medicine is vital, as there are ongoing advancements in treatments leading to improved patient outcomes. Specialists practising at Netcare hospitals continue to do pioneering work in their various fields, and it is important that we share this with other medical practitioners so that their patients can benefit too,” explains Bedford.
Dr Terry Ann Serebro, a general practitioner from Norwood who attended the Netcare CPD symposium, says, “I found the interaction worthwhile and what I learned will most definitely be of tremendous benefit to me in my practice. It is often all too easy to get caught up in consultations with patients and to neglect keeping abreast of the latest advances.”
General practitioner Dr Shabbir Panchbhai from Fordsburg found the presentations focusing on cancer the most beneficial. “The ethics talks were also very interesting. It is good to get the opportunity to network with other medical practitioners and to be exposed to their fields of expertise, which I as a doctor in private practice would otherwise not be,” he notes.
