Netcare in conjunction with CanSurvive Cancer Support Groups, which operates in association with the People Living With Cancer organisation, are hosting a cancer awareness relay in Lonehill Park, Johannesburg, on Saturday 06 September.
“All proceeds from the Netcare CanSurvive Walk will go towards cancer support organisations,” Netcare’s business manager for oncology, Theresa Roux, explains. “The main beneficiary of this event will be CanSurvive and their CanAssist Support Team. The team, assisted by University of Johannesburg students, provides refreshments for cancer patients at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital oncology clinics.”
Since October 2009, CanSurvive support groups have provided caring and confidential environments where patients can share their experiences, as well as get support and useful information from others who have been through similar experiences. Patients, survivors, their families, caregivers and friends are welcome at the meetings, and support is provided for all types and stages of cancer.
“We aim to provide support for cancer patients throughout their treatment and assist with adjusting to life after cancer. The importance of this kind of support to the psychological wellbeing of cancer patients and survivors should not be underestimated,” says Chris Olivier, co-founder of CanSurvive.
"A diagnosis of cancer, no matter what type, is devastating to the patient and their families. We have already walked that road and now want to help others on the journey,” Olivier notes.
You need not be a fitness fanatic to enter the Netcare CanSurvive Walk, as you can either enter to walk the full 5km, or as part of a four-person relay team. Each leg of the relay is 1.25km and is done in recognition of a person whose life has been impacted by cancer.
Roux says it is appropriate that the event takes the form of exercise, as a healthy lifestyle may help to prevent certain types of cancer. “As well as assisting those currently battling cancer, the CanSurvive walk aims to raise awareness about the things people can do to maximise wellness, such as exercising, eating healthy and giving up smoking.”
“The emphasis of the Netcare CanSurvive Walk is not on the disease, but rather on the celebration of life and appreciation for the people who are on this journey with us. Please join us, as awareness and solidarity are our greatest allies against this type of disease,” Roux concludes.
