The extensive healthcare experience and person centred care of the Netcare Group is setting a new standard in private mental healthcare in the Eastern Cape with the opening of the Netcare Akeso Gqeberha mental health facility.
“We are here to help people through their difficult times, as well as to offer the support needed to work through personal or professional challenges in a caring environment that protects privacy and embraces an integrated multidisciplinary approach to mental health,” says Danielle Fataar, general manager of Netcare Akeso Gqeberha mental health facility.
The 72-bed facility has received approval from the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Health and opened for admissions and outpatient consultations on 8 May 2023. It is located at 26 9th Avenue, Walmer in Gqeberha.
“Specialised psychiatric care and support, underpinned by compassion, is important for healing and progress. Through building professional mental healthcare capacity to treat conditions including anxiety, depression, bipolar mood disorders and substance use or addiction disorders, among others, we aim to bring hope where someone is feeling despair.
“Our services include therapy that can teach people the skills to cope with or overcome anything that may be a threat to happiness, serenity and contentment so that we can get the best out of all spheres of life.”

“Seeking professional help early before crisis point is reached and maintaining good mental health can make a significant long-term positive impact in a person’s life, and the stability of their relationships and commitments to friends, family and employers,” she says.
The new facility offers a core team of experts including psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and a social worker, supported by skilled and experienced nursing staff.
“Onsite consultation rooms, group therapy space, recreational areas, a gym, canteen and coffee shop are among the amenities of the purpose-built Netcare Akeso Gqeberha,” adds Netcare Akeso group commercial manager, Emma Hooyberg.
“Previously, young patients travelled to Netcare Akeso George for inpatient treatment, however we are making adolescent mental healthcare more easily accessible for families in the Eastern Cape with eight beds dedicated for adolescent patients,” she says.
The Netcare Akeso 24-hour crisis line, 0861 435 787, is available in the event of a psychological crisis. Netcare Akeso Gqeberha’s operations are supported with a dedicated Netcare Akeso vehicle for inter-hospital transfers, if needed, to Netcare Greenacres Hospital for additional medical care.
“Our therapists operate the Centre of Psychotherapy Excellence (COPE), offering face to face individual, group and family therapy sessions to ensure the continuity of care on a patient’s mental wellness journey well beyond their stay with us,” says Fataar.
“We thank the community of the Windy City for their friendly welcome and patience during the construction of Netcare Akeso Gqeberha. We look forward to being of service to you, in the many different facets of support and care we offer, now and into the future.”
