While the majority of graduates were Netcare employees, there were also many public service employees among them. As part of a partnership agreement between Netcare and the Free State Department of Health, more than 90 students have, for example, successfully completed their enrolled nursing auxiliary or enrolled nursing programmes at Netcare Education since May 2011. The tuition fees of the students were fully sponsored by Netcare.
“With nursing professionals and medical specialists in short supply in both the private and public sectors, Netcare is honoured to contribute to the education and development of South Africa’s healthcare professionals,” commented Shannon Nell, Netcare’s director: nursing and nursing education.
“We are delighted with the high number of graduates as there is a great need for healthcare professionals to receive good education, which will help to ensure that South Africa’s hospitals have competent and skilled staff who are fully abreast of the latest developments within their individual fields of expertise,” added Nell.
“The programmes have the further benefit of developing existing Netcare staff as well as employees of other healthcare facilities. Those participating in the programmes not only benefit from enormous intellectual and emotional growth but are also given the opportunity to realise their personal potential. In addition, the programmes allow new recruits to become familiar with the Netcare Way of caring while aligning students with our strategic pillar of growing with passionate people,” she explains.
Netcare Education has offered nursing training for the past 24 years and is an accredited nursing education institution with the South African Nursing Council. It operates five campuses across South Africa and coordinates the delivery of a broad range of programmes in several important fields of study. These are nursing and ancillary healthcare, generic skills development and training, leadership and management development, as well as emergency and critical care.
“All programmes offered are driven by Netcare Education’s vision to be the education, training and development provider of choice in the healthcare industry in South Africa,” observes Nell. “We have adopted a holistic approach, combining theory with experiential learning in hospitals, so as to provide the best learning opportunities for developing knowledge, skills and attributes while enabling qualified healthcare professionals to remain up to date with current nursing practice.”
