One lucky baby stands to win an education policy worth R25 000 at the Netcare hospitals’ exhibition stand at this year’s MamaMagic Expo to be held in Durban from 26th to 28th August.

“The prize, sponsored by Netcare Alberlito, Netcare Kingsway, Netcare Parklands, Netcare
St Augustine’s and Netcare uMhlanga hospitals will be a welcome contribution for the winning family towards their baby’s education costs,” says the regional director of Netcare’s Coastal Region, Craig Murphy.

“The prize is in keeping with our imperative of giving children the best possible start in life. The dedicated maternity units at our Netcare hospitals and our Netcare Stork’s Nests mother and baby wellness clinics provide comprehensive healthcare and support throughout pregnancy, at birth and for up to five years after the baby’s arrival.

“The R25 000 policy, through Old Mutual, can be used towards the child’s educational costs. To enter the competition, visit Netcare’s stand at MamaMagic: The Baby Expo,” Murphy explains.

Sister Jeanne Humphreys, maternity unit manager at Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital and head of the Netcare Stork’s Nest clinic located at the hospital, says that this year the staff of Netcare’s Durban hospitals will be offering information and advice on a range of subjects related to pregnancy and practical parenting.

“Our maternity nurses will be on hand to offer advice to expectant and new parents on a variety of aspects including breastfeeding, the procedure for booking into hospital for the happy event, milestone monitoring, and vaccinations for baby.

“We will also be weighing babies and offering milestone checks and our marketing team will be handing out free informative leaflets covering important practical tips for parents, such as the basic steps of doing CPR on babies and young children as explained by emergency medical services provider Netcare 911, as the procedure differs from that used to resuscitate adults.”

Mothers delivering their babies at a Netcare maternity facility automatically qualify for the Netcare Maternity Passport, which offers them a number of benefits including:

  • A 3D scan between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy
  • A baby gift bag full of goodies to assist the mom-to-be on this new journey
  • Placement of baby’s photograph on the Netcute website, if the parents opt for this
  • Assistance with the birth registration process
  • Baby’s first immunisation in the ward
  • The first ‘well baby’ clinic check-up at the Netcare Stork’s Nest mother and baby wellness clinic.
  • Netcare 911 registration for 18 months, with access to Netcare’s 24-hour advice line and select emergency medical services.

“Expectant and new parents are encouraged to attend the antenatal and postnatal classes offered by our Netcare Stork’s Nest clinics, as these provide a wealth of information to equip and empower them for the exciting journey ahead,” she adds.

“Even those who have had children before should consider attending such classes, not only to ensure that they have the most up-to-date information on a range of pregnancy, birth and baby matters, but also because of the considerable support such classes provide,” Sr Humphreys explains.

“Our Netcare Stork’s Nest postnatal services cover everything from the ‘baby blues’ that many new mums go through, to breastfeeding and how to care for your new baby. We can also arrange educational courses for child minders, with subjects ranging from hygiene and safety, to the importance of stimulation and diet for babies,” Sr Humphreys concludes.
