Community invited to breast cancer awareness drive

Dr Britta Dedekind hosts event at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital
Tuesday, October 11 2022

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and breast surgeon Dr Britta Dedekind is inviting members of the public to an event to highlight breast cancer risk, screening and stories of survival on Friday, 14 October 2022.

“Breast cancer remains the most common cancer globally, but the hopeful news is that there are more options for treating breast cancer and detecting risks earlier than ever before, especially with regards to genetic abnormalities associated with breast cancer,” says Dr Dedekind, who works closely with a range of specialists at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Hospital (NCBMH) to provide comprehensive care for people with breast cancer.

“We are inviting interested members of the community to join us for a Breast Cancer Awareness Day at NCBMH for expert talks and an exhibition to gain a greater understanding of breast health, which is of great importance for both men and women,” says Dr Dedekind, who has gained extensive experience in breast cancer treatment in both public and private healthcare.

The event will be held as follows:
Date: Friday, 14 October 2022
Times: Exhibition opens from 09h00 to 15h00, and the talks will be held from 12h00 to 13h30.
Venue: 12th Floor board room, Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital
For more information about the event please contact Michelle Norris on [email protected] or 082 920 4610.

Dr Jackie Kick, a radiologist with Morton & Partners, will share information about the application of MRI screening for breast cancer. Frieda Loubser, a registered genetic counsellor, will discuss genetic testing in breast cancer, and breast cancer survivors will share their personal stories of hope and inspiration.

Dr Paul Skoll, a plastic and reconstruction surgeon, will also be available for questions from the public regarding this important aspect of the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment.

Entry and parking for the Breast Cancer Awareness Day are free of charge. Information leaflets will be available for those attending to read more about the various aspects of breast cancer at home.
