Specialist-run emergency department now open at Netcare Linksfield Hospital

Significant development for private emergency medicine in Gauteng

Thursday, April 11 2019

Netcare Linksfield Hospital has announced that the practice of Professor Feroza Motara, Professor Abdullah Laher and Dr Muhammed Moolla has taken over the management of the emergency department at the hospital.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr Richard Friedland, chief executive officer of the Netcare Group, said that this is a significant development for private emergency medicine in Gauteng, for Netcare as well as for Netcare Linksfield Hospital.

“The accredited Level 3 emergency department at Netcare Linksfield Hospital now has an emergency medicine specialist either on duty or immediately available on call. The emergency medicine specialist will augment the care provided by an emergency medicine practitioner,” he added.

“The hospital is extremely fortunate to have secured the services of some of South Africa’s leading emergency medicine specialists and to be in a position to provide the Linksfield and surrounding communities with such a high level of emergency medical care.”

“Professor Feroza Motara is a doyen of emergency medicine in South Africa as well as being a family medicine specialist. She is the current academic head of, and is an executive member and the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa (EMSSA). We are honoured to welcome healthcare professionals of this stature to Netcare Linksfield Hospital,” noted Dr Friedland.

According to Mande Toubkin, general manager of emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social investment at Netcare, Professor Abdullah Laher and Dr Muhammed Moola are emergency medicine and intensive care

“All three of these highly qualified and experienced healthcare professionals are examiners for the Faculty of Emergency Medicine of the College of Medicine of South Africa. Together, they have more than 30 years of experience in public and private emergency departments both locally and abroad and have published more than 30 articles in international peer reviewed journals,” she said.

Dr Louis van der Hoven, general manager of Netcare Linksfield and Netcare Linkwood hospitals, thanked Dr Charles Meltzer for running the emergency department over the last 22 years. “Dr Meltzer tended his resignation as head of the emergency department at Netcare Linksfield Hospital to pursue an opportunity in family medicine.”

“We wish Dr Meltzer well in his new practice, which will be independent of Netcare Linksfield Hospital, where he will serve the community as a general practitioner,” he noted.

“We look forward to our emergency department growing into one of the foremost facilities of its kind in South Africa. Together with the new team of emergency medical specialists we will be working towards achieving a level 2 accreditation from the Trauma Society of South Africa for the emergency department of Netcare Linksfield Hospital,” concluded Toubkin.
