Medicross Carnival Mall family medical and dental centre in Brakpan on the East Rand celebrated its official opening on 30 July 2015.
Speaking at the opening, Dr Charmaine Pailman, managing director of Netcare’s Primary Care Division, which manages the Medicross centres, noted that the new facility will provide the community of Brakpan and the surrounding areas with accessible and convenient primary healthcare services under one roof.
According to Dr Pailman, the provision of quality care, convenience and accessibility for families to receive medical, dental, pharmacy and allied health services such as X-rays, physiotherapy and audiology, among others, has long been the recipe behind the success of Medicross. “At present we attend to the healthcare needs of families countrywide, providing services to over three million patients annually, through our existing network of more than 70 family medical and dental centres. In keeping with the Medicross convention, Medicross Carnival Mall is an accessible, modern facility with several healthcare services on site.”
“There are three general practitioners, three dentists, a physiotherapist, an audiologist and psychologist working from Medicross Carnival Mall. Other specialised services include pathology while plans are underway for the opening of a pharmacy and the inclusion of a radiology service,” says Dr Pailman.
The general practitioners at Medicross Carnival Mall are Dr Alec Goosen and Dr Karen van den Berg, who are both highly experienced. They previously worked from the Life Dalview Clinic in Brakpan. Dr Tharina Gunther, who worked in the emergency department of Netcare Pretoria East Hospital, as well as at Life The Glynnwood Hospital, joined the Medicross Carnival Mall team on a full-time basis as from 1 August 2015.
Dentists practising at the facility include Dr Nico Fowler, Dr Bernard Cohen and Dr Rozanne Perumal. Dr Fowler has worked in the profession for 30 years, more recently at Life Dalview Clinic, while Dr Cohen has practised in the Brakpan area for approximately ten years. Dr Perumal has relocated her dental practice from Actonville.
Free healthcare screenings
“To mark the official opening of Medicross Carnival Mall, which is the 72nd primary healthcare facility in the group, we offered free healthcare screenings for members of the public, which were well supported by the community. Free cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure screenings, hearing screenings as well as dental check-ups, were offered,” said Dr Pailman.
“The healthcare service providers and staff of Medicross Carnival Mall would like to impact positively on the health and wellbeing of the community. Health screening tests offer an important opportunity for individuals to detect health risks and to seek treatment, as well as to highlight the value of healthy lifestyle choices to prevent diseases.
Heart disease and diabetes are serious, rapidly growing lifestyle diseases in our country and we hope to raise public awareness of these modern-day healthcare scourges,” said Dr Pailman.
She added that Medicross Carnival Mall will have extended operating hours for the convenience of patients. Doctors will be available for consultation from 08h00 to 19h00 from Mondays to Fridays and from 08h00 to 14h00 on Saturdays. On Sundays and public holidays the facility will be open from 09h00 to 12h00. The dentists will work from 08h00 to 17h00 from Mondays to Fridays and 08h00 to 13h00 on Saturdays.
