The Johannesburg mother, who won an all-expenses-paid-for birth at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital in the Baby on Board competition at the Johannesburg MamaMagic Baby Expo earlier this year, welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world on Monday, 11 August.

The healthy 3.65kg baby girl named Sinenhlanhla, meaning ‘we are lucky’ in Zulu, is the second child of 32-year-old Nthabiseng Makume. As the baby’s name suggests, the family did indeed feel very lucky when they were told that they were the recipients of this sought after prize.

Little Sinenhlanhla was born nine years after her sibling. “After the birth of my first daughter, we decided to take a break from having children for a while. We started trying for another baby again last year and I am elated to have brought another healthy, happy daughter into the world. My firstborn daughter is just so excited to have her very own little sister to play with and she could not wait for us to bring her home,” says Nthabiseng, who was discharged from Netcare Mulbarton Hospital on Wednesday.

Her husband, Sydney, is also overjoyed with the arrival of his new bundle of joy and says that the prize has provided the family with the opportunity to have their baby in a leading private hospital where their every need would be taken of. “It gave me great peace of mind, knowing my wife would be able to give birth without any added stresses or worries,” he says.

The maternity facilities at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital comprise a 20-bed maternity ward; three delivery rooms including two birthing baths for parents who opt for a water birth, and a dedicated caesarean section theatre. The NICU has a total of eight beds, four of which are isolation beds.

“The state of the art maternity amenities have been purpose designed to provide a streamlined service in a tranquil environment,” says Nellie Koen, general manager of Netcare Mulbarton Hospital. “The caesarean section theatre and delivery rooms are all situated within the labour unit while the NICU is right next door. This means that the entire unit is self-contained. Accommodation includes five private rooms, a VIP room and five semi-private rooms, offering parents-to-be the opportunity to choose the type of accommodation that will suit them best.

Koen points out that the maternity facility not only has the latest equipment but is also supported by highly skilled and experienced medical specialists. Eight gynaecologists/obstetricians, five paediatricians, as well as a paediatric surgeon, paediatric pulmonologist and a paediatric nephrologist are on hand to care for newborns. The hospital already has a well-established 18-bed paediatric unit.

The prize not only covered the cost of the entire birthing process – paid for by Netcare – but it also included the storage of Sinehlanhla’s umbilical cord blood and tissue stem cells for up to 10 years as well as maternal blood tests, paid for by Netcells Biosciences.

Well-known brands, Stokke® and Philips AVENT, offered the couple a wide range of premium products such as a carrycot, car chair and pregnancy belt. Pampers sponsored a year’s supply of premium care nappies, and specialist South African retail baby store, Baby City, gave the fortunate couple a gift voucher to spend at any of their stores around the country.

“These prizes are a truly welcome gift for us and will help take a huge burden off our shoulders. We are very grateful to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital for paying for the full birthing process as well as to the other sponsors of the wonderful prizes which are definitely going to make an unbelievable difference to our lives and the life of our precious new daughter,” says Nthabiseng.
