Netcare employees from hospitals throughout Gauteng’s South West region, who have gone beyond the call of duty in showing generosity of spirit to patients and their colleagues, were honoured at a recent awards ceremony held in Johannesburg.

“No less than 25 staff members were nominated for the Netcare Hospital Division’s Gauteng South West region’s Carer of the Year awards. The nominees’ actions demonstrate how our staff members are embracing the Netcare values of care, dignity, participation, truth and passion and how these values are embodied in their daily interactions with patients, colleagues and others,” says Jacques du Plessis, managing director of Netcare’s hospital division.

Justinah Mankomba, a credit controller at Netcare Olivedale Hospital, was named the overall winner of the Carer of the Year Award for the Netcare hospital division’s Gauteng South West region. There were 14 other nominees in this category. Justinah, who hails from Zambia, noticed a distraught family standing outside the intensive care unit at the hospital and approached them to see if she could assist them. The family also happened to be from Zambia and struggled to communicate in English. Justinah opened up her heart to the family for the entire month that their relative was in hospital. She assisted them with accommodation, food, financial arrangements and also provided them with emotional support. The patient sadly passed away and Justinah then also assisted the family with funeral arrangements, including transport for the casket and the family. The family has since returned home to Zambia but their friendship with Justinah endures.

Netcare Krugersdorp, Netcare Union, Netcare Park Lane and Netcare Vaalpark hospitals emerged as winners in the Quality Leadership Award categories for flagship, large, medium and small hospitals respectively. The award is based on patient feedback, clinical outcomes, clinical governance as well as health and safety measures based on the Netcare Way of Improvement guidelines. Data collected from each hospital was collated into a comprehensive quality index, which was then reviewed by the hospital executive committee to determine the winners in each category.

The Head of Department Carer of the Year Award for the region went to Sr Erna Brooks, unit manager of the medical and surgical ward at Netcare Rand Hospital. Sr Brooks selflessly supported a colleague who was experiencing personal problems and struggling emotionally and financially. She provided her colleague with a shoulder to lean on during her ordeal and also regularly provided food for the staff member and her children. Nine other Netcare employees from different hospitals were nominees in this category.

“Each one of this year’s nominees is a star in his or her own right. All of the nominees have exhibited levels of care and compassion that go above and beyond even the high standards which we have come to expect from staff members. We would like to congratulate the winners and nominees and express our warmest gratitude to them for embodying the Netcare values with such selfless dedication,” concludes Barry Bedford, regional director of Netcare Hospitals Division’s Gauteng South West region.
